Where It All Began

Some stories are meant to be carried forward.

Deeply inspired by Banyuwangi's art, history, philosophy, and wisdom, Jawanes Batik was created to honour and carry these stories forward.

We believe the philosophy and stories drawn into every motif deserve to be recognised, understood, and appreciated. One way of keeping history alive is to continue telling its stories. In our case, we tell them through what we wear.

Our collections bring centuries-old motifs into considered, ready-to-wear pieces, allowing their stories to live beyond their origins while remaining rooted in the heritage from which they came.

For us, preserving heritage extends beyond the motifs themselves. It is also found in the craft and process behind each piece. Every Jawanes Batik creation is genuinely and meticulously handcrafted using centuries-old techniques, with each detail drawn by hand and guided by a tradition passed down through generations.

We consciously produce our collections in limited quantities, giving each piece the time and attention it deserves while preserving its quality, authenticity, and craftsmanship.

Behind the craft

The things that shape every Jawanes piece.

  • Genuinely Handcrafted

From the first application of hot wax to the colouring and finishing, every Jawanes piece is made by hand. Each stage is shaped by skilled artisans and a process that takes time, patience, and practice.

  • Made With Intention

We consciously produce in limited quantities, giving each piece the time and attention it deserves while preserving its quality, authenticity, and craftsmanship.

  • Supporting Local Hands

We work closely with local artisans in Banyuwangi, creating opportunities for their skills to be valued and carried forward through their work.

  • Made to Be Kept

We believe in making pieces with longevity in mind. Rather than following a cycle of constant newness, we focus on thoughtful design, careful craftsmanship, and pieces worth returning to.

  • Thoughtful Materials

We pay attention to the materials behind each piece, choosing natural and traditional materials where possible and looking for ways to minimise unnecessary waste throughout the making process.

Our Artisan

The hands behind every piece.

Every Jawanes Batik piece is genuinely handcrafted, from the first application of hot wax to the colouring and finishing. Each stage is carried out by skilled local artisans, with time, patience, and attention shaping the process.

Bunga Citra Lestari - Ocha drawing wax onto cloth with a canting

Bunga Citra Lestari - Ocha

Artisan, Hand-Drawn Tulis

Bunga Citra Lestari is one of Jawanes Batik’s canting artisans. Working with hot wax and a canting, she carefully draws each pattern by hand, one piece at a time, in the workshop we have worked with since our very first collection.

Her work is careful and deliberate, with each line following the traditional techniques she has learned through practice. The process takes time, from drawing the pattern to building up the layers of wax and colour that give each piece its character.

For Ocha, canting is more than a skill to master. It is part of a craft she grew up seeing around her, now becoming her own to carry forward.

At Jawanes, we believe that preserving craft also means creating space for the people who carry it forward. By working closely with local artisans, we hope to support their skills, value their work, and keep the knowledge behind this tradition in capable hands.
